New Indian jewellery lab supports increasing demand

A second lab has been set up in Mumbai to help ease the process of quality certification for diamond-studded jewellery.<BR/><BR/>The use of diamond studs on jewellery items made from precious metals such as gold has become increasingly popular and is an item increasingly exported for India's jewellery sector.<BR/><BR/>Roland Lorie, chief executive officer of the International Gemological Institute (IGI) Worldwide, which commissioned the laboratory, explained to Business Standard: "India is now evolving as world class supplier of…diamond studded jewellery, making it an emerging destination for outsourcing by developed markets. <BR/><BR/>"Certification is like giving trustworthiness to the piece of jewellery."<BR/><BR/>Quality certification was found to be a key issue for consumers buying the jewellery items and trends show a move towards branded and certified jewellery rather than traditional purchasing from family jewellers.<BR/><BR/>Gem and jewellery exports for India increased by 26 per cent over the January to December 2003 period, with an approximate export total of $10,646 million.
