Gold companies could soon be taking advantage of a new trend to hit the consumer market - luxury electronics.

The US consumer electronics market is now being marketed as a luxury product with glamourous packaging and previously everyday products being adorned with diamonds and gold.

One example is a mobile phone which is available in 18 carat yellow or white gold which comes with a year's concierge service for meeting people's reservation and other needs.

The increased popularity for luxury goods could also help to see further demand in gold items, since the precious metal is constantly associated with wealth and glamour.

Bill Curtis, chief executive of CurtCo Media, publisher of Robb Report, the luxury lifestyle magazine, explained the appeal of luxury goods to The New York Times: "The luxury market is not a matter of what something costs.

"It's a matter of the entire visceral and emotional experience attached to it. It is about being inspired by products and services, whether that means hotels, boats, cars, jewellery. And this is clearly where the best part of consumer electronics is heading."

Sony is now conducting a project to help reform the way more financially stable consumers look at electronic devices to move into the luxury goods market with a new line called Qualia.
