Monday, 19th April 2004 (7149 views) The second annual tribute to the gold mining industry this year includes events outside Western Australia, organisers have announced.<BR/><BR/>Gold Week was established last year to raise the profile of the sector and encourage investment and development. The event started yesterday and ends on April 24th with a national mine open day at ten sites across Australia.<BR/><BR/>Australian Gold Council chief executive Tamara Gorrie stressed that it is important the general public understands how the industry works.<BR/><BR/>"Too often misinformation, rumour, innenudo tend to circulate regarding the mining industry, particularly gold mining," she told ABC News. "And we certainly have nothing to hide, and in fact we welcome and encourage people to come and see what we do and in fact how well we do it."<BR/><BR/>The largest gold nugget in Australia, believed to be the second largest in the world, will be on show at the Ballarat Gold Museum during Gold Week. Weighing 25.5kg, the Newmount Normandy nugget is worth more than $1 million and is the most significant display ever exhibited at the Gold Museum.<BR/><BR/>The Sovereign Hill tourist attraction plans to leave $200 gold nuggets to be found daily in the diggings area during Gold Week and it will also run the Gold Super Mine tour, taking visitors to areas that are not usually accessible across Sovereign Hill's site.<BR/><BR/>Gold Week runs from Sunday April 18th to Saturday April 24th.
