James de Givenchy, celebrated jewellery designer and nephew to the renowned fashion designer, is due to speak and exhibit his latest fine jewellery creations at the Long Beach Museum of Art's Bal des Bijoux (Jewelry Ball).

The event is a black-tie fundraiser for the museum's artistic and educational programs and includes a preview of the new exhibition, "The Modernist Jewelry of Claire Falkenstein," along with dining, dancing, a live auction, and a jewellery boutique featuring the creations of eight designers, The Long Beach Telegram reports.

A trained sculptor and painter, Mr Givenchy works under his mother's maiden name, Taffin, opening a Madison Avenue showroom of the same name in 2000. Taffin boasts clients throughout the United States and Europe, for its whimsical yet classic designs. Each distinct piece of fine jewellery is inspired by nature, featuring oceanic creatures, such as starfish, sea urchins, or anemones.

"People think that jewelry is not needed or a luxury, but it's more than that," Mr Givenchy said. "It's an identity for a lot of people. Clothing has a function while jewelry doesn't. Jewelry is art that is worn."

The late Claire Falkenstein worked in a variety of media throughout her long career and the Long Beach Museum of Art's exhibition features more than 100 of her jewellery designs including rings, earrings, necklaces, buttons, brooches, pendants, bracelets and body ornaments.

Le Bal des Bijoux's silent auction includes two pieces from the collection of 'King of Bling' Neil Lane, who supplied jewellery for the film "Chicago" and is worn by celebrities such as Kate Hudson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna.
