Indian treasures dating back from the 17th century have sold for a huge £5 million this week.

A host of items adorned with emeralds, rubies, sapphires and Indian diamonds once owned by adventurer Lord Clive made up a collection including a flask, dagger, swatter and pipe.

Funds raised were three times more than those estimated for the items, thought to be due to the rarity of the pieces.

The key piece was a jewelled jade flask that was sold for a massive £2,917,250 and was originally made for the Mughal royal court in India.

The bidding battle took place in Christie's, London, with four or five bids being placed on each article.
