Jewellery made from 18 carat gold is being promoted in China by the World Gold Council (WGC) following keen interest when items debuted in Shanghai last year.

Up to five per cent of the country's total gold consumption is produced by the jewellery, something which officials believe will increase to 15 per cent in the next three to five years.

Albert L. H. Cheng, managing director of World Gold Council Far East told China Daily: "K-gold was introduced to Beijing earlier this week and will be brought to other major cities such as Chengdu, Dalian, Wuhan or Guangzhou earlier next year."

The 75 per cent pure gold was launched by the WGC in association with Hong Kong-based Chow Sang Sang Jewelry Co Ltd, Chow Tai Fook Jewelry Co Ltd and Shanghai-based DH Splendia Jewelry and five extra partners have now been added.

According to Mr Cheng young people in China like fashion jewellery, rather than the typical 24 carat gold products wanted by many other Chinese.
