Jewellery potential plans discussed in India and Namibia

Tuesday, 29th June 2004 (4630 views)

India and Namibia have been in talks to discuss potential gemstone and jewellery possibilities between the two areas.

A group of Indian members from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council visited Africa last week to discuss the possibilities, with India interested in Namibia's minerals since it is mainly an import based industry.

Vice-chairperson of the promotion council in India, Bakul Metha, told New Era: "It would make sense for a mining country that sits on rough diamonds to sell them to a country that processes about 92 percent of the world's rough diamonds."

Additional possibilities include training opportunities and extensive institutions for jewellery.

However some in Namibia have raised concerns about the plans, worried that it could lead to jobs and other revenue being taken from the country.
