Research and Markets has released a new report that claims recycled metal consumption in the UK was worth around £1.56 billion last year.

The 'Metal Recycling Market Report 2004' included metals such as gold, platinum and tin.

According to the report, the UK's export of scrap metals has considerably grown during recent years and there are a large number of small and mid-sized companies in the sector, with many now planning consolidation.

Although legislation does have an affect on the market, the report argues that waste targets and regulations set to begin in 2005 are likely to create new opportunities for metal recycling rather than hinder it.

Modest overall volume growth is expected in the sector until 2008, with precious metals in particular to experience a 4.1 per cent increase over the period.
