Friday, 13th August 2004 (4146 views) A Greek artist and jewellery designer is celebrating after being told her designs are to be used on the Athens Olympics' gold, silver and bronze medals.

Elena Votsi has previously designed jewellery for Gucci and has created a new look for the medals this year after she explained to officials that previous images of the goddess of victory Nike were actually wrong.

Since the 1928 games in Amsterdam, the goddess has been shown on medals sitting on a chariot with a wreath in one hand and an ear of corn in the other honouring athletes, with a stadium next to her.

However Ms Votsi explained that the designer's interpretation of the myth was "a mistake" and that the goddess is never meant to sit, according to Associated Press.

In the new image the goddess has wings and is boldly heading feet first from the heavens delivering the laurel to the Panathinaikos stadium, with designs based on a 421 BC marble statue.

In addition the background of the new medals shows the Acropolis and the Olympic ring and Greek wording are placed above Nike's head.
