South African firm Harmony Gold Mining has organised an agreement with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) to allow its Elandsrand operations in the North West to operate every day of the year.

Known as CONOPS (continuous operations), an agreement was reached in July for implementation on a national level, but now NUM has approved operations on a regional level too.

Bernard Swanepoel, chief executive commented: "Having an agreement on CONOPS at Elandsrand will be beneficial to all involved. Elandsrand, which is currently developing a new mine below the current workings, is ideally suited to the work practices related to CONOPS."

The agreement means that CONOPS is in place in the company's Free Gold, Evander, Target, ARMgold and Elandsrand operations, which contribute towards 66 per cent of South African production.

It is hoped the Elandsrand New Mine project will produce around 450,000 ounces of gold over a project life of 17 years.
