Friday, 27th August 2004 (4233 views) Harmony Gold, the world's sixth largest gold miner, says it has reached an agreement with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) concerning some of its striking employees.

The firm says it has defused the situation at the group's Free State Joel mine, where miners had been protesting since Tuesday.

Reports on Business Day suggest that NUM workers staged the stoppage as a result of a dispute over the replacement of four employees at the mine who were declared medically unfit to keep working as a result of ill health.

The Joel mine produced 62,000 troy ounces of gold during the last financial year.
