Belfast to experience a gold rushThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Wednesday, 15th September 2004 (4129 views) The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) has revealed that a number of companies have applied for licenses to dig for gold in Belfast.

According to the company, several applications have been made and cover the North West region and include areas such as Derry, Omagh and the Sperrin Mountains.

It is thought the rush could be in response to some adverts the DETI released last year trying to get companies to take advantage of opportunities in the region.

The granted licenses will mean companies can conduct exploratory operations to search for minerals in areas of up to 250 square kilometres, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

Those that do obtain a license are likely to be able to mine for an initial period of two years, but then this can be increased to six years.
