Wednesday, 22nd September 2004 (5803 views) Demand for gold jewellery is on the increase this month, as Indians begin to buy ready for religious festivals.

Dealers at a recent world fair said that the demand usually picks up ahead of the Hindu festival season, which peaks with Diwali in November.

Mukesh Mittal, a jeweller who participated in the five-day fair told Reuters: "Demand is very good. You will see people buying gold every day in India nowadays."

Gold is often used by many Indians as a gift during festivals and it is seen as a lucky metal.

The change in prices does not appear to affect consumers either and dealers predict buying will last through year-end and boost consumption.
