Tuesday, 19th October 2004 (6787 views) A new show has been opened at Paris' Musee Dapper showing the different types of body decoration throughout the ages - such as piercings and gold jewellery.

Photographs by Alain Soldeville show images of different decorations and beside each is a text explanation of their significance, according to the Daily Times.

One example are the heavy gold ear ornaments worn by Indonesian people, which are used to signify their standing in society and are part of the bridal dowry.

In addition, heavy gold jewellery is often worn in association with Buddha and his elongated ear lobes are said to be as a result of such heavy princely jewellery.

It is hoped the exhibition, which is running until next April, will help to explain the sometimes strange body art that people see and help to explain the world of ancestral rites.
