A gold ring discovered near Wrexham in Wales has been declared as treasure.

The medieval item was first found by an amateur historian in October last year with a metal detector and now the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff believes it dates from the late 12th or early 13th century.

George McKean, who found the ring, told Ic NorthWales: "The report from the museum says that since the ring is at least 300 years old and is at least 10 per cent precious metal, it is treasure."

It is thought the ring may have once contained a sapphire or ruby, since it has an empty setting.

According to the historical society member, over the last ten years a number of 12th and 13th century finger rings have been unearthed.

The National Museum does not want the ring, but the Wrexham museum is said to have expressed an interest in it, any money paid would be split between Mr McKean and the owner of the land it was found on.
