Malaysian jewellers thrive

Monday, 6th December 2004 (4316 views)

Specialist jewellers in Malaysia are thriving as consumers increasingly turn to independent retailers to help them make that special purchase.

In particular demand for shophouses in the area around the Jalan Masjid India shopping centre in Kuala Lumpar, also known as "Pekan India", has climbed as retailers look to cash in on the tourist bonanza.

Leading this surge in business are jewellers in the Jalan Masjid India shopping precinct director Syed Akbar Ali told the Malaysian Star.

"Business for Zeenath Begum Jewellers [one of the gold shops in Jalan Masjid India] has been gratifying, as we had just opened another outlet in the area," he explained.

"This place has given birth to some of the big names in the retail industry… as well as Habib Jewels (gold and jewellery experts)."
