The Salvation Army has received nine gold coins in its US collection kettles from anonymous donors so far in this festive period.

Two of the coins - a half-ounce Liberty and a one-ounce 'Chinese Panda', were unusually gift-wrapped.

Other gold coins received include a $5 coin, a Liberty coin and US coins from 1911 and 1913.

Since 1982, the Salvation Army has received more than 300 gold coins dropped into kettles by anonymous donors.

The Salvation Army has a goal of $8 million for its 2004 holiday fund-raising campaign.

This effort funds its holiday programs and provides services to those in need throughout the year.
