Friday, 11th February 2005 (5991 views) The US fashion industry is going crazy over a new pair of gold earrings created in New York, inspired by gates.<br/><br/>The unique jewellery forms part of a collection of one-of-a-kind fashion accessories inspired by the New York City Subways.<br/><br/>Items are on display at the New York Transit Museum shop in Grand Central Terminal and are to be auctioned off to raise money for the museum.<br/><br/>The gold earrings are modelled on wrought-iron subway gates and were created by Simon Alcantara, with a retail value of $9,000.<br/><br/>Gabrielle Shubert, the museum director, told the New York Times: "We're trying to create a cachet: Taking the subway is the coolest thing you can do."<br/><br/>According to Ms Shubert, the goods are popular across a range of people, including US hip hop fans and politicians.<br/><br/>Figures show that subway inspired items now make up over a third of the $4 million annual budget at the museum, with jewellery a best seller.<img src="http://directnews.dehavilland.co.uk/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=7779693"/>
