Japan to auction rare gold coins

Japan's Finance Ministry has revealed it is to auction off around 32,700 rare Japanese gold coins.<br/><br/>The items were issued between 1868-1989, known as the Meiji and Showa eras and are thought to be worth several billion yen.<br/><br/>Held by the state, the coins will be auctioned throughout a three-year time span, beginning this year.<br/><br/>A panel of experts has now approved the coins' quality and conventional floor auctions and internet auctions will be used to sell the items.<br/><br/>The items are thought to be proving popular with collectors, since the coins are the last of such government holdings and many of the pieces are rare.<br/><br/>According to reports, the coins will be placed in individual transparent packaging to increase their value.<img alt="track" src="http://directnews.dehavilland.co.uk/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=8300368"/>
