A collection of ancient gold has been discovered in Iran.

The three kilograms worth of 2,500 year-old gold was found when archaeologists were digging in ancient palace ruins in Southern Iran.

Head of the Iranian excavation team, Eshan Yaghmai, commented: "We have found three folded plates of very pure gold for the first time in the area.

"Once unfolded, there is a chance that we see inscriptions on the plates that give invaluable information about the kings who built the palace."

Mr Yaghmai has been digging for years at the Achaemenid palace of Bardak Siah in the Bushehr province and believes the 24-carat gold could not have been used for common purposes.

The plates are now being sent to Tehran for further examination.
