Jewellers in Calcutta have seen an increase in demand for gold as Indian brides continue to choose the precious metal for their wedding ceremony.<br/><br/>The leading jewellery house in the city, PC Chandra, is hosting an exhibition of pure gold ornaments from today to mark the popularity of gold for the wedding season.<br/><br/>"The demand for gold jewellery is increasing every year, especially when it comes to wedding jewellery," Prosanto Chandra, deputy managing director of the jewellery house, told the Calcutta Telegraph.<br/><br/>Called Swarna Mirigaya, the exhibition showcases a series of new designs in necklace sets, bangles, chains, rings and earrings, all specially created for the festival.<br/><br/>As well as traditional filigree designs, the individually crafted pieces feature a mixture of western and ethnic motifs.<br/><br/>"We have noticed that for wedding jewellery, people prefer a lot of filigree work and antique designs, whereas jewellery influenced by western designs sells well for other occasions," Mr Chandra explained.<br/><br/>Rising demand for gold has seen the PC Chandra house expand from four to eight showrooms over the last five years.<img alt="track" src="http://directnews.dehavilland.co.uk/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=8530427"/>
