Thursday, 9th June 2005 (3785 views) Odyssey Marine Exploration is planning to open an interactive shipwreck and treasure attraction along the Mississippi River in New Orleans. <br/><br/>Located in an old brewery, Odyssey's Shipwreck & Treasure Adventure will display stories behind some of the world's most famous shipwrecks, their treasure and historical artefacts. <br/><br/>Central to the attraction is the gold treasure found on the SS Republic, a Civil War-era ship that sank in a hurricane off the coast of Georgia while sailing from New York to New Orleans in 1865. <br/><br/>Odyssey discovered the SS Republic almost 1,700 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean in summer 2003 in the world's most extensive deep-ocean archaeological excavation. <br/><br/>More than 51,000 gold and silver coins and approximately 13,000 additional precious artefacts were recovered <br/><br/>Greg Stemm, co-founder of Odyssey Marine Exploration, said in a press release: <br/> "This new attraction will reveal a fascinating, behind-the-scenes look into how we find shipwrecks and their amazing treasure, artefacts and cargo."<br/><br/>He added: "We think visitors will find the highly interactive approach to shipwreck exploration to be very entertaining."<br/><br/>The attraction will showcase the history, artefacts, treasure and films from the shipwreck and will open in the French Quarter of New Orleans in the summer.<img alt="track" src="http://directnews.dehavilland.co.uk/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=8709367"/>
