Scotsman in line for gold poker bracelet

Monday, 11th July 2005 (4400 views)

A young Scot is in the running to win the No Limit Texas Hold'em Poke World Championship after surviving another round over the weekend.

Graeme Harrison is one of the remaining internet poker players who qualified online and is among the highest-stacked chip-holders.

He finished the first three-day round with $142,700's worth of chips, putting him among the top five chip counts.

Up for grabs is a prize fund likely to be in excess of $5 million and the coveted diamond and gold winner's bracelet.

That said, the entrance fee alone for the championship was $10,000 and now only 500 of the original 5,700 entrants remain.

However, online poker site PokerStars gave players the opportunity to qualify online for just a few dollars or pounds.

In total the company paid for a 1,100 entries into The Big One.

But many of the profession players still do not rate the amateur online fanatics, saying online playing deprives them of the ability to bluff successfully round a real table.

Nevertheless, Britain's biggest poker winner, John Gale, says that luck is still a factor.

"While poker in general is probably more skill than luck, in major tournaments the proportion of skill goes up to 80 per cent because of the quality of the opposing players," he said.
