Grading improvements for jewellery industryWednesday, 13th July 2005 (4266 views) In what may be a breakthrough development in the jewellery industry, a new colour standard has just been introduced to provide a more accurate grading of white gold. The White Gold Whiteness Index template aims to provide manufacturers, retailers and suppliers with a more accurate definition of the colour of white gold. The template allows the gold to be categorized into three grades according to their measurement on the ASTM Yellowness Index, so that a decision can that be made on the amount of rhodium plating required. Customers will also now have a more satisfactory means of determining the value of particular products. "We're pleased to lend our colour expertise to help the jewellery industry accurately assess and communicate that value," says vice president Jan-Paul van Maaren of GretagMacbeth, which helped develop the standard. The new standard can be purchased through the Manufacturing Jewellers and Suppliers of America (MJSA).
