Bulgarians unearth ancient buried goldThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Thursday, 18th August 2005 (4404 views) Archaeologists have unearthed 15,000 highly decorated gold rings in Dabene, Bulgaria.

The 4,200-year old gold rings were discovered in a tomb and some of them are so finely crafted that the welding mark joining the metal into a ring is invisible even with a microscope.

The rings are thought to be the work of 'proto-Thracians' who once lived in Bulgaria and other parts of the east.

Vasil Nikolov, director of the Bulgarian Archaeological Institute, compared this latest treasure trove to that of Troy which German archaeologist, Heinrich Schliemann, discovered in 1868.

"This treasure is a bit older than Schliemann's finds in Troy and contains many more golden ornaments," he commented.

The gold rings are the latest in a line of Bulgarian discoveries such as the gold wreath and ring found in Yambol, Eastern Bulgaria recently.

© Adfero Ltd
