An exposition called 'The Golden Horde. History and Culture' is to open in Kazan, Russia.

This will be a first for the city as branches of the St Petersburg State Hermitage were previously only located in the capital itself, Las Vegas, London and Amsterdam.

The Golden Horde was a Tatar state established around 1378 and associated with Genghis Khan and the items on display were made between the 13th and 15th centuries.

Among the exhibits are a belt set fabricated from gold and silver, the 'Jenghiz Stone' and 328 decorative gold and silver items such as vessels, p'ai-tzu, coins and jewellery from the Simpheropol hoard.

This is the largest exhibition of its kind on the contributions of medieval Turks, Mongolians and other locals to world art and culture.

In addition to the exhibition, visitors to the centre in Kazan will be able to use the information facilities and a school for restorers will also be based there.

The Golden Horde had connections to Byzantium, Western Europe and China, a country whose gold demand has recently risen.
