The Arthur M Sackler Museum at Harvard will be exhibiting numerous precious shawls and silver pieces in its exhibition 'Silver and Shawls: India, Europe, and the Colonial Art Market', which will also feature gold.

Dating from the colonial period, the objects will illustrate the shaping of colonial goods to a European market.

Kimberly Masteller, the Sackler Museum's assistant curator of Islamic and Later Indian Art, commented that the "shawls become closer to European taste, whereas the silver takes on more exotic, Indian design elements".

The fusion of European influences from British goldsmiths working in Madras with Indian styles introduced by colonially employed Indian craftsmen resulted in distinctive pieces.

Some of these, such as a swami-style gold necklace and earrings created by Peter Orr & Sons, one of the most renowned producers, are on show.

An engraved circular racing trophy from 1884 which exactly replicates a gold dish given to the Prince of Wales when he visited India in 1875 and 1876 will also be displayed.

This impressive collection can be viewed until January 29th 2006.
