The residents of Mumbai have been flocking to the coast in an attempt to recover some of the gold thrown into the sea at the recent Ganpati celebrations.

The Ganesha festival, held in honour of the elephant god Ganesha, takes place every year on the day he is believed to have been born as a god. Devotees believe that making offerings to Ganesha will bring them luck.

On the final day of the ten-day ceremony statues of Ganesha are immersed in water.

Mumbai is the city most well known for its participation in the festival and every year the Girgaum Chowpatty, the most popular immersion spot, provides rich picking for treasure seekers.

"I come here every year. Last year alone, I could collect nearly Rs100 in three or four days from the sand," 14 year old Babu, told IANS.

Babu also claimed to know people who had found gold chains and earrings on the beach in the days following the festival. The gold diggers certainly hope that Ganesha will bring them luck.
