Shipwreck is promoting unusual gold Christmas presents this year.

The company is offering consumers the opportunity to purchase an artefact from the Odyssey shipwreck.

Steamship the SS Republic sunk during a storm in 1865 and its cargo of coins and bottles lay in the ocean until 2003, when Odyssey Marine Explorations began an excavation operation.

Odyssey recovered $75 million worth of gold and silver coins, some of which can now be purchased.

The coins were minted before and during the Civil War and, according to the company, one of them is a replica of a coin hand-inscribed with 'war' and '1861'.

All purchases come complete with a certificate of authenticity.
