The Salvation Army has been thrown a gold coin in Illinois, the same state where the first one was donated to it in 1982.

Since 1982 a tradition has sprung up whereby members of the public occasionally drop a gold coin in the Salvation Army's kettle during collections.

"Once again, we are delighted to receive this very special gift, in what has become a tradition of the season," Lt Col David Grindle, a Salvation Army divisional commander, told UPI.

The Salvation Army has reportedly received 310 gold coins since 1982, including two this year.

The first coin, a 0.44-ounce Austrian re-mint of a 1915 gold coin, was donated earlier this month and valued at $210.

The latest gold coin is a Netherlands Ducat dating from 1986 and worth around $75.
