From 2007, US consumers can buy gold bullion coins depicting the wives of former US presidents, the Associated Press reports.

Under a new bill, the government will launch a series of dollar coins featuring all 37 dead US presidents and a companion $10 collection depicting their wives.

The government is issuing the coins to educate US citizens and to raise money.

"The dollar coin is a valuable educational tool - much like the 50-state quarter series - that will help inspire interest in the history of the leaders of our country," said Senator John Sununu.

The gold bullion coins would show each former first lady alongside emblems of their causes.

Unmarried presidents won't be left out in the cold. Those without spouses will have companion coins showcasing the standout themes of their tenure.

Made from 99.99 pure gold, it is hoped the $10 coins may become a hot collectors' item.

There is an outside danger the new collection won't catch on after the educational 'Sacagawea' coin fell on deaf ears in 2000.
