Critically acclaimed US jewellery designer Helen Ficalora has designed a new gold necklace in a bid to raise money for Canavan disease.

The 14 carat-gold pieces are engraved with the word "smile" and will retail at $160, the Boston Herald reports.

It may be the perfect choice for purveyors of tasteful designs with a social conscious, as 15 per cent of the proceeds go towards helping fight the degenerative brain disorder.

Her stunning brand of jewellery has been strongly influenced by her time growing up in Southampton by the Atlantic Ocean, where she often spent her days collecting shells, sea glass and starfish.

The strength of her collection has drawn in celebrity clients such as US TV actress Brooke Shields and film starlet Kelly Ripa.

A quick glance on her website reveals a substantial chunk of her collection – which includes earrings, charms and ringbands - revolves around charity.

A quarter of the proceeds raised from her Jennifer Garner tulip charm are churned into an ovarian cancer fund. Ficalora also donates a fifth of the money raised from her 14-carat pink gold charm & chains to breast cancer causes.
