Couples are frequently embellishing invites to precious occasions with the equally precious metal of gold.

According to India's Financial Times, wedding invitations decorated with gold, diamonds, rubies and other semi-precious stones are being sent out by some opulent couples.

Some of the cards start at Rs 5,000 each and are generally ordered in quantities of around 50 to 80.

Guests at the recent high-profile wedding of Rihen Harshad Mehta each received invitations worth Rs 2,000 bedecked with gold and diamonds.

Meanwhile, the craze is also taking hold in the US. The Roanoke Times reports on Francine Barish-Stern and Kenneth Bray's business, Art on Gold, which creates invites on gold-toned metal.

Their business originated from their own wedding three years ago at which everything they gave out was printed on the gold-toned metal.

The couple claim their invites and other items will never rust and cannot be destroyed by water.
