Christie's topped off a successful 2005 with its "Important Jewels" auction, held December 13th.

The company said the sale brought in over $8 million for the firm, contributing to sales of $89.6 million for the year – 60 per cent more than in 2004.

It sold 345 of the 411 lots on offer, with 89 per cent of the value of the lots being sold.

The most expensive lot in the sale was a Burmese ruby and diamond necklace, bought for $296,000. A pear-shaped 23.71-carat diamond ring came second, fetching $286,800 from a private Russian buyer.

"Bidding was constant all across the board with great activity from both private collectors and trade clients," said Rahul Kadakia, head of jewellery at Christie's American division.

"The jewellery market has remained extremely buoyant throughout the year realising tremendous prices in every Christie's sale worldwide and we look forward to continued success in 2006."

The third most expensive lot, a diamond necklace, went to an American private purchaser at $240,000. It was followed by a 7.70-carat diamond ring, for which a US trade buyer paid $216,000.
