Khadim has opened a new gold jewellery showroom in Calcutta.

The company, better known for its footwear designs than gold accessories, is keen to branch into the jewellery market and extend its brand image, the Calcutta Telegraph reports.

The store was opened yesterday (January 24th) and exclusively stocks gold jewellery. Pieces range from traditional designs to more delicate modern pieces, catering for everything from weddings to office wear.

"We have something to suit all age groups and all occasions. Bengalis still love gold above everything else and hence we are concentrating only on this form of jewellery. No diamonds or precious stones for us," said Khadim's Basu Roy.

The store features specially designed black interiors to enhance and complement the gold jewellery.

Managing director Siddhartha Roy Burman admitted that the expansion into gold jewellery was a calculated risk for the footwear company, but one it was confident it could pull off.

"We ventured into jewellery retailing with our superstore in Kanchrapara, North 24-Parganas, which has a fully functional ornaments division. By observing the popularity of that section of the store, we decided to expand this brand as a full-fledged one under the name Khadim's Sona Khazana," he told the Calcutta Telegraph.

The Khadim brand is already popular among the city's shoppers. Like its footwear, the company will aim its jewellery at the mass market with an emphasis on affordability matched by quality guarantees.
