Consumers in North India will be given new opportunities to ensure the quality of their gold jewellery.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) plans to open six new gold hallmarking centres in Ludhiana, Panipat, Gurgaon, Shimla, Jammu and Chandigarh, the New Kerala reports.

The centres help guarantee the purity of gold jewellery, safeguarding consumer rights.

The government is reported to be providing financial assistance for the establishment of the centres.

Speaking in front of the Inter-Media Publicity Coordination Committee (IMPCC), Chandra Shekhar, deputy director general for BIS Chandigarh, said that he hoped the government would make hallmarking mandatory for all jewellery shops.

Mr Shekhar said that BIS would be targeting consumers to raise awareness of the BIS hallmark.

A previous survey by BIS of some 120 jewellers across eight cities found that 88 were not abiding by prescribed levels of gold purity, typically offering 12 per cent less gold than the caratage suggested.
