Manhattan restaurant Le Bernardin is urging Valentine's lovers eating at home to spice up their cuisine with gold, the Journal Times reports.

Chefs at the posh New York restaurant have put their heads together to come up with a Valentine's menu that is easy to recreate in your own pad.

And they believe one of the best ways to your partner's heart is through the yellow metal.

For desert, pastry chef Michael Laiskonis recommends that you bake a chocolate caramel cashew tart and top your creation with a smattering of gold leaf flakes.

He has produced a recipe that is easy to follow detailing how the 23-carat gold flakes can be easily purchased in baking supply stores.

Edible gold was a big culinary hit over Christmas. It always comes in 23-carat form and is odourless, tasteless and calorie-free.

Besides tarts, the noble metal is also sprinkled in coffees, chocolates, soups, salads and even cocktails.
