A Malaysian bank is issuing a new mint of gold and silver coins to commemorate the promotional work of the country's late first lady, Datin Seri Endon Mahmood.

Ms Endon passed away last year and Bank Negara Malaysia hopes to reflect her efforts to promote Malaysia's culture and heritage through the new mint.

The coins were launched on Tuesday (February 14th) and will be available for purchase next month from the Money Museum, the Bank Negara Malaysia, Sri Pentas and the Royal Mint of Malaysia.

The 8.6 gram gold commemorative coin has a face value of RM100 and a 999.9 purity. Only 150 have been minted and they will retail at RM1,028.

Some 200 silver commemorative coins have also been issued. Each has a face value of RM10 and a retail value of RM138.

Finally, the bank has issued 20,000 bi-metal commemorative coins, which are worth RM1 and will trade at RM8.

Each of the three coins is legal tender.

Malaysia's prime minister and Ms Endon's widower, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, was there to oversee the launch of the new coins.
