An historic gold coin has fetched £77,625 at a UK auction, the Times reports.

The 17th century pistole went under the hammer in London, as part of a collection of Irish coins that raised £358,920.

The Charles I coin was extremely rare and of pertinent historic note. It would have been used to pay mercenaries sent to Dublin to aid royalist troops.

History buffs can view the gold coins in just nine museums, with another two in private hands.

It's the second time a high-value historic gold coin has changed hands in the UK this month.

Earlier in February the British Museum stumped up a record £357,832 for a gold coin showing the head and name of Anglo Saxon King Coenwulf.

At 1,200 years old, it is the earliest example of a gold coin bearing an English king's name that was in general usage.
