A 19-year-old jewellery designer from Mumbai has won a one-kilogram gold bar in the first AngloGold Ashanti Auditions Gold Jewellery Design competition in India.

Radhika Mahesh Jhalani was awarded her prize when her piece was unanimously selected by the panel of six judges as the best on show at the catwalk exhibition, conducted by AngloGold Ashanti and the World Gold Council.

Miss Jhalani's inspiration was "the combination of the fully ripened golden Alphonso mango and the brilliance of the summer sun", with selection based on several criteria, including wearability, visual impact and originality.

Among the 1,500 entrants from a variety of backgrounds, 200 were shortlisted before 40 finalists, who will all have their creations manufactured, were selected.

The judging panel included AngloGold Ashanti marketing executive Thero Setiloane, fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee and World Gold Council managing director Sanjeev Agrawal.

Mr Agrawal hailed the competition as a great success, saying the idea behind it had been to generate greater design innovation within the traditional framework that was popular with the Indian consumer.

An Indian extension of this global competition was seen as the logical progression, after similar events in South Africa and Brazil, as the Asian nation is the largest single gold market in the world.
