Friday, 31st March 2006 (8782 views) Football fans in Rostov had the once-in-a-lifetime chance to get up close and personal with a golden piece of footie history as the World Cup Trophy Tour reached Russia this week.Thousands of people flocked to the Palace of Sports to catch a glimpse of the 18-carat gold FIFA World Cup Trophy, noticias.info reports. They watched a 3-D film about the World Cup, played table football and were finally able to have a souvenir photo taken with the trophy itself. The trophy began its tour of the world on January 7th in Ghana, from where it set out on a 94-day journey to 28 different countries. The King of Malaysia was one of those lucky enough to be able to touch the sparkling golden statue. The mayor of Rostov, Mikhail Chernyshev, said: "It is a great honour for us to receive the trophy here in Rostov. Sport in general is on the up in the region and the local authorities are trying everything to get more youngsters to practise it." Rostov was chosen ahead of Moscow and St Petersburg as the Russian city where the trophy would be displayed.
