Gold CDs offer data protectionWednesday, 19th April 2006 (4002 views) Gold CDs and DVDs that offer a longer disc life than conventional discs have been developed by KMP Media and are being sold through Kodak. The Preservation discs feature a 100 per cent 24-carat gold layer. The yellow metal does not oxidise or break down, meaning that data, photos and documents stored on the CDs will be preserved for 300 years with proper handling. Information stored on gold Preservation DVDs will last between 80 and 100 years with proper handling. In a company release, KMP Media quoted industry experts as saying that conventional burned CDs have a short life span of between two to five years. It was noted that the silver reflective layer eventually tarnishes by way of exposure to light, heat and rough handling. KMP Media senior vice president Jim Gordon said: "For people trying to protect critical data, music, images or videos, the benefit [of Preservation discs] is peace of mind." The discs are subjected to tests for long life capability that involves exposure to extreme heat, bright lighting and rough handling.
