The Kolar Gold Fields are set to be turned into a tourist attraction by the tourism ministry of Karnataka in India, according to The Times of India newspaper (TOI).

It is hoped that the world's second-deepest gold mine will be developed into a tourist hotspot by a private-public partnership.

Visitors would be able to stay in dwellings that housed the original miners and hear stories about the site that have so far been kept secret.

Shanta Kumari, the tourism secretary of Karnataka, told TOI: "Tourists visiting Kolar will witness a settlement that was once called Little England. The town reeks of British influence and still Christmas and New Year is celebrated with great fervour."

Officials believe that the project would create employment opportunities in the area, especially for those that used to work in the former mines of Kolar.
