Phones, teeth and even eyes have all been designated as potential jewellery locations of late, but the next target of jewellery-loving Americans recalls the great James Bond.

After eye jewellery and 'grilles' – removable bejewelled coverings for teeth – guns are the latest target for those looking to add a touch more glamour, with some enthusiasts going for the golden gun.

Gun shop owner Clark Miculek told Associated Press she had a specially crafted 24-carat gold gun made for use in competitions which she described as her substitute for 'bling', or showy jewellery.

"I don't wear any jewellery, so my gold is on my gun," she said of the handgun.

The news comes as gun manufacturers look to widen the profile of those buying their products, with the aesthetics of guns becoming an increasingly important part of their marketing.

Altered grip sizes and efforts to improve the versatility of the guns have been among the changes to try to capitalise on what is said to be a $285 million annual market.
