A scientist from Rice University in Houston, Texas, has been named in a list recognising the top developments in nanotechnology.

Naomi Halas is renowned for her work that makes use of gold nanoparticles in the treatment of tumours.

Now she has been included in the 'Nano 50' list of the top 50 innovators, technologies and products that have "significantly impacted" on the field of nanotechnology.

Ms Halas was recognised as "an individual recognised as a pioneer in a specific area of nanotechnology, with a significant background of accomplishments in advancing the state of the art in nanotechnology".

She led a project at Rice University's Laboratory for Nanophotonics to create a nano-sized pH meter that could be used to measure changes in living tissue.

The process used gold to coat a core of silica inside 'nanoshells', which were then doused with pH-sensitive molecules. It could be used to carry out so-called 'optical biopsies'.

The Nano 50 list was judged by a panel of industry experts.
