Minerals Council of Australia aims for sustainabilityThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Wednesday, 26th July 2006 (4452 views) The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has published a document recognising that the mining industry's future is "inseparable from the global pursuit of sustainable development".The report, entitled 'The Australian Minerals Industry: Change, Responsibility, Prospects and Constraints', states that the mining and metals industry contributes around eight per cent of Australia's GDP (through either direct or indirect means). As well as this, the industry directly employs some 150,000 Australians and indirectly employs 320,000 more, and contributes A$4.6 billion to the government in the form of taxes and royalties. The MCA recognises that the mining industry has received a lot of criticism for its social and environmental practices, but asserts that it is "engaged in the global debate about sustainable development". These values are invaluable to take forward as Australia rises to the challenge of meeting the metals demands of countries such as China and India. The MCA represents the interests of Australia's gold industry after merging with the Australia Gold Council earlier this year.
