A Zambian mine primarily focused on copper extraction has also uncovered related deposits of gold shown in drilling results released by Zambezi Resources.

The company, which owns the Cheowa project, announced the assay data of the first two diamond drill holes at the site located 95 kilometres southeast of the capital Lusaka.

Following a history of copper mineralisation at the site, the latest grades discovered are up to 3.3 per cent, with a related value of gold up to 0.56 grams per tonne.

Zambezi Resources also said that it would continue its exploration schedule, which is due to enter phase two in the near future to test an additional 5,800 cumulative strike metres of electromagnetic conductors.

Further existence of gold and copper in these areas is expected, the company said, and it hopes to uncover values of the precious metals similar to the positive grades seen during the 1990s, when the mine was focused on copper but still displayed generous gold deposits as well.
