Vancouver-based gold mining corporation Northern Lion has announced it has begun a helicopter-bourne geophysical survey on a mineral prospect in southern Portugal.

The Cercal property, which is located on the Iberian Pyrite Belt of gold mineralisation, around 75 miles south-east of Lisbon, has shown promising preliminary results from past soil sampling.

The survey is expected to be completed within approximately ten days and is being undertaken by exploration subcontractor Geotech, of Aurora in Ontario, Canada.

It will employ an advanced, deep-penetrating versatile time-domain electromagnetic system, which include a high-resolution cesium magnetometer to search for any mineralised gold or other precious minerals.

In total, there are around 88 known deposits on the Iberian Pyrite Belt, including seven deposits classed as 'giant' (containing 100 million tonnes of mineable ore), with a range of minerals from gold, silver and copper to zinc and lead.
