The security of the Cripple Creek & Victor gold mining company has been improved after former employees stole over $1.7 million worth of unprocessed gold.

Daniel Blake Parsons, John Hurtt and Peter Qammen were arrested this week, the Denver Post reports.

They had been diverting gold-saturated fluid into their own homemade filter and sending it on to a refinery in California, from where it was sold on the open market.

"They were making quite a bit of money on the side during their employment up there," said Larry Martin, an investigator for the 4th judicial district attorney's office.

In response to the theft, the firm has "intensified its already tight security" at the Colorado gold mine.

Earlier this year, the safety achievements of Cripple Creek & Victor were recognised at the Annual National Western Mining Conference and Exhibition.
