Tuesday, 26th September 2006 (2026 views) Metals producer Nova Gold has been working to accommodate the local aboriginal people near its Galore Creek project near Stewart, Canada, Canoe Network reports. The project will comprise an open pit mine that expects to produce 3.7 million ounces of gold, 40 million ounces of silver and 5.9 billion tonnes of copper. With a life span of 20 years, the mine will bring economic benefits to the area. Nova Gold reached a cultural, environmental and social agreement with the local Tahltan aboriginal people earlier this year, which includes a heritage fund managed by the Tahltan people. The gold firm will contribute C$1 million to this fund each year. The Tahltan people will also receive preferential treatment from Nova Gold in terms of employment and training opportunities. "We recognised the first thing, no matter where you go or where you want to operate, you have to have agreement and a good relationship with the local people," said the mine's manager Carl Gagnier. Nova Gold is committed to prioritising environmental stewardship, saying it "cares about preserving our environment for future generations".
